Reading Buddies Bristol In Need of More Volunteers

Can you give 30 minutes a week? Reading Buddies is looking for volunteers for the 2019-2020 school year!

Reading Buddies is excited to announce the addition of Holston View Elementary kindergarten to its lineup of schools who participate in the program. Holston View, along with Anderson, Avoca, and Fairmount Elementary schools are looking for volunteers who are willing to meet with their buddy on a weekly basis for just 30 minutes at a time. After being paired with their kindergarten through second grade buddy (depending on the school), volunteers monitor and assist by reading to the student, listening to the student read, encouraging the student, and/or attending the student’s school activities when possible. As much as supporting critical reading skills, volunteers help their buddies by establishing a positive relationship with them.

Reading Buddies began in January 2013 with a pilot program of 58 Anderson kindergartners. It has since expanded to four elementary schools in Bristol, Tennessee, and two elementary schools in Bristol, Virginia. The program anticipates serving more than 880 students in the 2019-2020 school year.
