David Bibee – 1973 (Tennessee High School)
David Bibee was one of Tennessee High's most well-rounded athletes, winning the George King trophy for Best All-Around Athlete and the Ted Alexander trophy for Most Valuable Baseball Player his senior year. He earned four letters in baseball, three in football and basketball, and two in track, for a total of 12 letters for his career. As a senior, he participated in the East-West All-Star Game.
In baseball, Bibee was All-Big 9 (‘72-’73), All-Big 5 (‘72-’73) All-District 1 (‘72-’73). Basketball awards included All-Big 5, All-Tournament Florida, and All-Big 9 in 1973. In 1972, he was All-Big 9 in track and a member of the 880-relay championship team. In football, David was All-City (‘71-’72), All-Big 5 (‘71-’72), All-Big 9 (‘71-’72), All-Upper East Tennessee (‘71-’72), All-East Tennessee (‘71-’72) and All-State (‘71-’72). Bibee was quarterback for the 1971 State Championship, 1972 State Championship, and 1972 National Championship teams. He was a starter during the historic 35-1 run (1970 10-1 defensive back, 1971 12-0 quarterback, 1972 13-0 quarterback).
During the five state playoff games, Bibee threw 11 touchdown passes (seven TD passes during the state championship finals, three against Covington 1971, and four against Chattanooga Baylor 1972). He added three rushing TD’s and five 2-point conversions (three passing, two rushing). In the five playoff games, Bibee scored a total of 94 points.
Bibee holds the THS record for career touchdown passes, 34 in 1971-72. He also holds the THS record for total yardage in a single season, 2,031 yards (in 13 games) in 1972, and career total yardage in 1971-72 with 4,062 yards. In 2020, David was inducted into the National Football Foundation Mountain Empire Hall of Fame as a legend.
Bibee played for the University of Tennessee in 1973-1977. He was on the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl teams. David went on to become a long-time college and high school football coach. He had stops at Tennessee, Ole Miss, University of North Alabama, Middle Tennessee State, Austin Peay, Appalachian State, University of South Carolina, Tennessee Tech, Clemson University, East Tennessee State, UT Chattanooga, Baylor School, and Tennessee High. David had seven bowl appearances as a coach.
