Gil Kyle – 1973 (Tennessee High School)
Gil Kyle starred in football and basketball during his illustrious prep career with the Vikings.
Kyle started as a freshman and played both ways all four years of high school. He played on the 1971 Tennessee State Championship football team and was a member of the 1972 Tennessee State Championship and National Championship Viking team. He was also part of the Vikings’ historic 35-1 run (10-1, 1970; 12-0, 1971; 13-0, 1972).
Kyle garnered top honors throughout his football career for the Vikings. In 1970, he was the All-Big 7 Back of the Year, All-Big 5, and All-City.
In 1971, he was named to the same teams, and was also named to the All-State team. He was also honorable mention on the All-Southern All-American team.
In 1972, Kyle was again All-City, All-Big 7, All-Big 5, and All-State.
Kyle had 3,589 career rushing yards at THS (7.6 avg. per carry). In 1972, he ran for 1,157 yards (8.8 avg. per carry). Over his career, he scored 45 touchdowns and had 24 points, to go along with 28 passes for 415 yards. For his career, he rolled up 4,004 yards in total offense.
Kyle received a scholarship to play football at Georgia Tech, where he played for three years.
