Dear Students, Staff, Parents, and Community Members:

I would like to take this opportunity to say I am honored and very excited for the opportunity to serve as your next director of schools. Bristol Tennessee City Schools is one of the finest school districts in the state. BTCS has a proud tradition of excellence that exists due to the wonderful people of our community and the hard work of our students and staff. My wife Jennie and I are eager to become part of the Bristol community. We truly look forward to making this home.

Allow me to begin by sharing a little about me and my family. First and foremost, I am a husband, father, and grandfather. My wife Jennie and I have three adult children, ranging in age from 35 to 23 years old. We have three granddaughters and will welcome a fourth granddaughter in January. Our kids are far from perfect, but they are wonderful people. I say this because my experiences as both a dad and granddad have helped shape me as an educator and a leader. I understand and value the bonds of family. I often view the workings of our schools as an extended family.

I deeply believe in a quality and comprehensive education for all students. I grew up in rural West Virginia in a very modest home instilled with the values of hard work. Education has been key to my success and is critical to the success of the young people in our community. Bristol is known, not only for its academic excellence and extracurricular programs, but also for the positive and healthy relationships between staff and students. I take very seriously that you have entrusted the young people of this community to our care and am eager to join our outstanding staff who give their best day in and day out for students. Bristol is most definitely a good place to live, and Jennie and I are excited to now call it our home!

My commitment to you as your director of schools is also my passion and is the reason I do what I do. That is, to maintain and grow a rigorous teaching and learning environment that provides every student with a sense of belonging while helping students to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. It is critical to every student's success that they graduate from high school with the habits of mind and skills necessary to pursue and achieve their goals and dreams. I look forward to meeting with many of you in the weeks and months to come. I want to know your dreams and aspirations for our school system. I want to learn about our strengths and our weaknesses. I will be looking, listening, and learning. Eventually, working with you, I will be leading our district toward our shared goals.

There is much for our students to be excited about! BTCS is a state leader in a number of areas. I am confident that working together with our teachers and administrators with those shared goals in mind, we will become a national leader as well. In closing, I am thankful to our school board for the opportunity to serve, and I cannot express to you how very excited Jennie and I are to be the newest members of Viking Nation!

With great pride,

Tom Sisk, Ph.D., NCSS
