Teacher of the Year Jacob Mims holding two Teacher of the Year awards

Congratulations Jacob Mims, Rotary Teacher of the Year

Jacob Mims, special education teacher at Holston View Elementary School, was honored as Bristol Tennessee City Schools most outstanding teacher by the Rotary Club of Bristol VA-TN.

The event at the Bristol Train Station marked the 37th Annual Frank W. DeFriece Jr. Outstanding Teacher Awards presentation. Mr. Mims received a gift of $3,500. In addition, Holston View was awarded $1,000.

Teachers were nominated from Bristol Tennessee City Schools and Bristol Virginia Public Schools with one teacher from each system selected as the 2024 Rotary Outstanding Teacher. Each teacher submitted a nomination packet that was then scored by an anonymous panel of judges composed of educators and business representatives.

"I'm very grateful to receive this award," Mims said. "Teaching special education has always been my passion, but I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my fellow teachers and supervisors at Holston View over the years. I've been truly blessed with a good group of people who feel more like family than co-workers."

The following comments were only a few from those who wrote letters of support for Mr. Mims:

“Mr. Mims is a remarkable educator who consistently demonstrates an exceptional ability to develop positive relationships with the students under his care. His genuine and compassionate approach creates a nurturing environment where students feel not only supported but also inspired to reach their fullest potential.”

"Mr. Mims is not only a teacher in the CDC classroom but has become a vital fixture in our school community. His willingness to participate in various entertaining activities, such as turning trash cans into drum sets, showcases his creativity and commitment to making the learning experience engaging and enjoyable for all students."
