Setting the Standard for Excellence
Setting the Standard for Excellence

Congratulations BTCS

We are excited to announce that students in Bristol Tennessee City Schools are setting the standard for excellence in education in the state of Tennessee, as recently released measures indicate they continue to perform well above state averages. Their accomplishments below are a testament to their hard work and dedication to learning!

School Letter Grades

Schools in our district were among the highest rated in the state according to the new school letter grade rating system recently released by the state. Six BTCS schools received an A, while two achieved a B. BTCS was one of only 11 districts in the state that received all A and B results.

Schools that received an A include Avoca Elementary, Haynesfield Elementary, Holston View Elementary, Tennessee Middle, Tennessee High, and Tennessee Online Public School. Anderson Elementary and Fairmount Elementary received a B.

“I want to take this opportunity to celebrate the amazing work our students, teachers, and staff are doing in our schools each day and say what an honor it is to serve this district,” said Dr. Annette Tudor, director of schools. “This is a reflection of their dedication, as well as the tremendous commitment of our board of education to providing a quality education to all students.”

“As with most scores and assessments, letter grades do not tell the whole story,” Dr. Tudor said. “They are a single measure or a snapshot of how well a school is performing academically at a certain point in time. While we are proud of this accomplishment, our schools and students are so much more, and we will continue to work hard and look for ways to grow to ensure all students are performing at their highest level academically, socially, and emotionally.”

Reward School Designations

The district is also excited to announce that the following four schools have been designated Reward Schools by the Tennessee Department of Education: Avoca Elementary, Haynesfield Elementary, Tennessee Middle, and Tennessee Online Public School (6th year in a row!). Reward status is the top distinction a school can earn in Tennessee for outstanding growth and achievement.

The measures used to calculate the overall score include achievement, growth, percent of students who meet the state's Ready Graduate criteria, graduation rate, chronic absenteeism, and English language proficiency.

TVAAS Level 5

As reported earlier this school year, the district achieved a Level 5 composite score on Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) data, the highest distinction available from the Tennessee Department of Education and characterized by the state as significant evidence that the district's students made more growth than expected. Some highlights from the TVAAS data include the following:

  • District Level 5 distinction in all content areas: Literacy, Numeracy, Science, and Social Studies
  • All district school composite scores are at Met Expectations (Level 3) or Above Expectations (Level 4 or 5)
  • Five Level 5 schools in composite scores: Anderson Elementary, Avoca Elementary, Tennessee Middle School, Tennessee High School, and Tennessee Online Public School
  • Three Level 5 schools in Literacy: Anderson Elementary, Tennessee Middle School, and Tennessee Online Public School
  • Five Level 5 schools in Numeracy: Avoca Elementary, Holston View Elementary, Tennessee Middle School, Tennessee High School, and Tennessee Online Public School

Congratulations and a special “thank you” to the entire Bristol community for your support of BTCS and public education!
